Review of The Carrington

Comfort food, generous portions, cool beer, and familiar faces. These are the makings of a great pub. But from time to time even the best of pubs need a bit of a facelift. And when that time comes, we all hold our breath a little. Will the makeover kill the bar’s cool vibe or make it better?

The Carrington in Surry Hills is a longstanding institution, keeping things lively on the corner of Bourke and Arthur Street for over 100 years. This year, she finally got her facelift, and we’re happy to report it went well. Really well.

The new owner, Roger Gregg (ex-Keystone Group manager), remodelled the pub last October after Drink’N’Dine called it quits back in 2014 and closed its doors. The venue is back and better than ever with a refreshed menu, an updated beer and wine list and a whole new look.

The atmosphere is casual and laid-back. The front of house maintains that true pub feel with bar-top tables, dim lights, and a prominent corner location. But continue on back past the kitchen and you’ll find yourself in a large open space. The hanging plants, shutters, and fairy lights make you feel like you’re in a neighbor’s backyard.

Invite some friends along, because this is a great place to meet up with a one, or two, or fifteen. The back restaurant can easily accommodate large groups. And the massive TVs make it a perfect spot to watch some footy with friends.

But don’t just come for the venue. The place serves up some smashing dishes, including a daily special seven days a week. Their massive sausage rolls, thick-cut steaks, and the weekly Sunday roast pay homage to traditional pub grub, while the meat and cheese platters, and the fish and vegetarian specials ensure that even the most diverse group of Surry Hills’ locals will leave happy and well-fed.

Food at The Carrington

While beer is a given in any pub, this pub keeps it classy with a healthy wine list too, which includes wines from Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. There’s even an Argentinian Malbec on there that pairs perfectly with their thick, juicy steaks.

Well done, The Carrington. We are glad to have you back in the hood. We’ll see you on Sunday for your stellar roast and we’re bringing our dog too (now that we know you are pet-friendly too).
