Review of Mjolner
The Speakeasy Group, who are behind such other fine establishments as Eau de Vie and The Roosevelt open Mjolner in Redfern. Mjolner (which means the hammer of Thor) is billed as a carvery and whiskey bar and owner Sven Almenning describes the theme as ‘contemporary viking luxe’.
Mjolner (pronounced ‘Mjol-near’) takes up residence in an old tobacco factory and the underground bar and restaurant is dimly lit with exposed brick walls and black leather banquette seating creating a masculine feel along with slick Scandanavian design features.
Whiskey is the star of the show at Mjolner with over 600 bottles on offer. But, if whiskey is not your thing, they’re also offering serious cocktails served in theatrical style, along with craft beers and a wine selection.
Of course the food has not been forgotten and in keeping with their viking theme, they are offering a carvery with a rotating selection of meats, one red meat, one white meat, one fish dish and a vegetable dish. Expect to see animals being carved by chefs and served straight to your table – viking style and complete with appropriate viking cutlery!
We think Mjolner is a welcome addition to the Redfern small bar scene.
