FEATURED IN:  TOP 10 RESTAURANT OPENINGS OF 2016 | TOP 10 RESTAURANTS IN THE CBD | TOP 10 PRE-THEATRE RESTAURANTS

The city seems to be on fire recently with some stellar restaurant openings.  Mercado is one of these openings to take note of.

Some of you may remember Chef Nathan Sassi from Surry Hills hot spot, Nomad.  Well after leaving Nomad over a year ago he’s back, this time with his own venture.

Hidden underground on Ash Street you will find an inviting restaurant, featuring warm woods, an open kitchen and plenty of charm.  It certainly fits the corporate bill which is appropriate given the location.

But really, Mercado is all about the food and they’re going back to basics, making their own cheese and breads, preserving, curing their own meats and respecting local farmers and producers.  They’re embracing old fashioned cooking techniques, traditions and values.

Food at Mercado

The food is described as Spanish, though it is certainly not traditional and will change according to the marketplace and the best available produce of the day.  They start off with a share style tapas menu, offering dishes such as spiced cauliflower, roasted pine nuts and jersey milk labne or roasted prawns, shellfish butter and bottarga.

The menu then moves on to their specialty – rotisserie/wood oven meats where you can order a spit roasted whole cooked lamb with house-made yoghurt or a bread crusted John Dory with crushed peas, feta and za’atar.  The sides haven’t been forgotten with options such as potato and truffle mash with chicken and truffle gravy or roasted carrots, almond dukkah and tea soaked currants.

Cheese lovers will want to leave room to choose from their Cheese Trolley with a selection of their hand-made cheeses of the day, while sweet tooths haven’t been forgotten with options such as a rosewater and pistachio trifle.

Good to know, they also offer a set menu for groups and a very reasonably priced pre-theatre menu.

In terms of the wine, the list is rather extensive featuring Australian and International drops.  Your sommelier will be more than happy to help you with your choices.  They also offer a cocktail list, should that be your preference.

We’re glad to see Nathan Sassi and his food back on the Sydney dining scene.  You’ve been missed!
