Review of Fred’s & Charlie Parkers
Fred’s and Charlie Parker’s are Merivale’s newest offerings and it’s a dual venue. Upstairs you will find the restaurant Fred’s, whilst downstairs you will find the bar, Charlie Parker’s.
But for this review, let’s start with the restaurant…
The interior of Fred’s has been designed to feel like you’re in someone’s home. It’s warm, inviting and understated. The interior features a simple colour palette of creams and greys with lamps providing a warm ambience. There is also an open kitchen which blends cleverly into the space and allows diners a first hand glimpse into their kitchen secrets.
Head Chef Danielle Alvarez is behind the food at Fred’s and she has a passion for sustainability. It’s nice to see a women in the kitchen and there are plenty of other talented women making up her culinary team.
Danielle’s menu will change regularly depending upon the best available, ethically produced fare and the freshest ingredients. There is a farm to table approach to her cooking and natural techniques such as cooking with fire feature prominently.
Downstairs you will find Charlie Parker’s a local speakeasy and headed up by Palmer and Co. alumni Sam Egerton and Toby Marshall. They’ve gone for a dark and moody vibe and it feels like a grown up bar.
Cocktails are obviously a focus and they’re mirroring Chef Danielle’s respect for produce in their drinks.
Good to know, they also serve a bar menu at Charlie Parker’s should you be looking for a more casual bite.
We think Fred’s and Charlie Parker’s offers a great night out catering for dinner and pre or post drinks in the one venue. We think it suits both groups and couples alike. Though do beware the meals are on the pricey side.
