Review of East London
FEATURED IN: TOP 10 GASTRO PUBS
One of Paddington’s favourite neighbourhood pubs, The London Hotel, is sporting a new restaurant and it’s celebrating Asian inspired spices and flavours. East London has opened on the upper level, with a share style menu that focusses on Shanghai and Sichuan cuisines.
The decor for this 80 seat restaurant retains a rustic charm, with exposed brick walls, caramel hues, warm woods and a communal dining table taking centre stage.
The food is described as ‘Chinese comfort food’ and it’s brought to us by Executive Chef Jack Steer (ex Press Club, Spice Temple, Chin Chin, China Doll, Rockpool Bar & Grill). Not bad credentials.
But you won’t find greasy or heavy Chinese food here. The menu is designed to be light and fresh with chilli and spices cutting through the oils.
As mentioned, the dishes are designed to be shared and feature options such as wontons with bug meat, prawn, chilli and Sichuan pepper, crispy Sichuan duck with pickled cucumber salad and five spice and drowned fish with dried chilli, shallot, bean sprout and chicken broth. The menu will change monthly, so locals need not get bored.
The food menu is complemented by Asian-infused cocktails and an all Australian wine list.
We think East London is a welcome addition to Paddington’s dining scene. In fact, we for one are excited to notice Paddo’s dining scene flourishing once again after a few lack lustre recent years. Plus, we are pleased to note they take bookings. Hooray!
