Review of Catalina
Catalina at Rose Bay is a Sydney dining institution. It is a family run business, which has been going strong for 20 years and has been the recipient of numerous well deserved accolades.
Situated in prime position right on the water, this stunning restaurant is the perfect place to bring guests to showcase our beautiful city, or simply the perfect spot to enjoy a spectacular meal. Either way, Catalina is a quintessential Sydney dining experience.
To make the most of the view, we suggest arriving for lunch and spending an afternoon luxuriating in the glamorous surroundings. But should you visit for dinner, you will still enjoy a view of the calm waters and twinkling lights.
Naturally, seafood is a specialty and Executive Chef Mark Axisa has created a fresh and authentic menu, inspired by the classics – French, Italian, Spanish and Mediterranean.
Some of the highlights of the Autumn menu include the Grilled Western Australian Marron with lemon thyme brandade, avruga and orange butter along with the Pan seared scallops with spanner crab and squid ink tortellini, cauliflower puree and bottarga.
For mains, you cannot go past the Glacier 51 Toothfish with dutch carrot, caramelised daikon, enoki, shiitake mushroom dumplings and consomme or the House made parsley spaghettini with Mooloolaba king prawns, confit Clarence River baby octopus, cuttlefish, child and garlic bread crumbs with lobster oil. Yum!
Sweet tooths may want to take note of the Verjuice poached pears with pear puree, vanilla cream puffs and beurre noisette ice-cream, or perhaps the Goats curd cheesecake with macadamia streusel and kumquat semi-fredo.
In terms of the drinks, there are bespoke cocktails on offer (we love the Harajuku Girl – Tanqueray Gin, cucumber, sake, mint and house made coconut syrup, served in a wasabi rimmed coupe and topped with yuzu) and your sommelier will be more than happy to recommend you a bottle of wine, or to match your wine to your courses should you choose.
Whilst the food and wine (and cocktails) at Catalina are superb, you can also always be sure of stunning service. Just the right amount of attentiveness and friendliness at the same time.
They really have got it down pat at Catalina!
Oh, and if you really want to make an entrance, why not arrive by Seaplane, Water Taxi or Italian Speedboat?
