Review of Bloodwood

Bloodwood.  No, not cashing in on the teenage vampire fantasy, but rather a restaurant named after the Bloodwood tree.

Bloodwood is an unassuming bar/restaurant, located on King Street in Newtown.  In fact, it would be easy to walk straight past, oblivious to the secret hidden inside.

The decor meshes new and industrial finishes, with recycled and reclaimed materials.  Inside, you’ll find a long, narrow restaurant with exposed brick walls, bare light bulbs, red retro laminated tables, vintage chairs and mounds of recycled wood.  Newtown designer Matt Woods certainly has the eclectic and cool inner west vibe down pat.

On most nights, you’ll find the three chef owners, Claire van Vuuren, Jo Ward and Mitch Grady, all ex fine dining resto Claude’s, exactly where they like to be – in the kitchen, serving up their seasonal menu designed to be shared.  Make no mistake, this is not run of the mill food, they’re offering fine dining quality at cafe prices.

The wait staff are knowledgeable and are able to offer  passionate, personal advice and suggestions about your menu options.  Impressive indeed.

What a gem.
