Review of A1 Canteen
Chef Clayton Wells of Automata fame opens a casual restaurant, he’s calling a A1 Canteen. But this is no oridinary canteen. There are no trays, there is no one ladeling food onto your plates.
The light filled interior boasts high ceilings and features concrete flooring and a stainless steel open kitchen, with comfortable leather banquette seating and plenty of wooden tables. It’s smart, but not fancy.
A1 Canteen is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is served until 11.30am and offers a short array of dishes ranging from simple eggs on toast to more adventurous options such as a grilled mortadella and fried egg sandwich with green hot sauce, herb salad and jalapenos.
On the lunch menu you’ll find a selection of sandwiches, as well as more substantial dishes such as a roasted lamb shoulder with za’atar and tahini yogurt.
For dinner the menu lends itself to share style with options such as Lamb tartare, eggplant, tahini yoghurt, pickled green almonds and sumac, or perhaps Tasmanian octopus with fennel, ink, xo
chilli and red vinegar.
I think A1 Canteen is a top spot for a casual meal, whatever time of day!
