Review of A Tavola
A Tavola, which translates to ‘to the table’, is a sexy Italian bistro that’s been a firm favourite of mine for years. With good reason.
One of the main reasons I love A Tavola is that I am always assured of friendly, efficient service and consistently good, reasonably priced, quality Italian fare.
The entrance to the Darlinghurst restaurant is dominated by a long marble communal dining table, while the back room and the upstairs sections provide more intimate seating.
The restaurant’s main menu is printed on a small piece of paper tucked into your napkin. Take our advice and immediately put this to the side. Not that there aren’t some great options on this menu, but you’re after the sweet stuff. You want that Blackboard menu.
The Blackboard menu, scrawled in Italian, contains their ‘specials’, notably their homemade pasta selections for the evening. This is where you’ll find my attention every time. Don’t worry if your Italian is a little rusty, your friendly Italian waiter will happily explain the menu to you. My usual order is the homemade Pappardelle con Ragu (their signature dish) and boy is it good!
Oh, it would be remiss of me to not let you know it would be a crime not to leave room for the Cremino al Cioccolato. A salted caramel ice-cream and Italian meringue dessert, which is served to look like a Cappuccino. This is the stuff dreams are made of.
