No doubt you know and love Shady Pines.  Well then, it’s a sure thing, you’re going to love Baxter Inn, from the same good people behind the Shady Pines Saloon.

Be warned, this bar’s not easy to find.  Walk down a dodgy looking laneway (opposite the Redoak Boutique Beer Cafe), turn right, note the bouncer, head down an even dodgier looking staircase, push open the non-descript door.  Most likely you’ll recognise the entrance by the snaking line of eager patrons, waiting for entry.  The bar has a capacity of 130, and for our money, that’s a good number.

This place is all about one thing – whisky - with 300 different whisky’s on offer.  But, don’t fret if you’re not a whisky enthusiast - there’s an impressive looking wine list, beers on tap and classic cocktails to keep you happy.  Good to know, the barmen are more than happy to educate you on your whisky choices, should your whisky knowledge not be quite up to scratch.  In fact, the barmen (note: no barwomen) are amongst the friendliest we’ve found in Sydney.

The place is dark, cosy and inviting, the kind of place you could get lost in for hours.  There’s no mistaking the decor is reminiscent of Shady Pines, minus the taxidermy wall features.  Without a doubt, this is a hotspot for city workers, relaxing after a hard days grind, and those others lucky enough to be in the know.

  1. Donelle Robinson says:

As an ex-Victorian, I was quite curious when I heard about the Sydney lane-way scence, and I was determined to check it out.
The Baxter Inn is located down a brick-paved lane-way, and then down 2 flights of stairs, so ladies ensure that your office heels are in your bag and your commuter flats firmly on your feet!
Comfort is instantly restored upon opening the fire door at the bottom of the stairs.
The bar extends the length of the room, and behind it are displayed a dizzying array of whisky bottles, looking very similar to an old-fashioned library book-shelf, complete with ladder for easy access.
The room has a low ceiling, and has a large number of small, candle-lit tables for a more intimate gathering.
Not being a whisky drinker, it was with more than a hint of nerves that I perused the drinks menu, but the friendly, attentive and knowledgable (and dare I say it – attractive!) bar staff were keen to help, and also thoughtfully provided a small jug of water to dilute my drink if required, and iced water to cleanse the palate afterwoods.
My adventure into whisky drinking proved it’s is not a drink for me, however offence was not taken, mind more than soothed by a good look at the drinks menue, and my palate restored to normal temperture by a glass of the excellent house white.
The Baxter Inn is also excellent for catching up with friends and venting after a stressful day at work.
On the way out, a quick visit to the ladies showed them to be clean and plentiful, as well as mercifully empty.
The bar, down the end of the lane, has a strong Melbourne feel about it.
Just leave the stilletoes in your bag!
