Archibald inspired High Tea @ The Sofitel

Archibald High Tea

The Sofitel Wentworth Sydney is a luxury 5 star hotel located in the CBD.  But did you know, The Sofitel has gained a reputation as putting on one of the best High Teas in Sydney?  In fact, The Sofitel loves to create themes for their High Teas and we were recently invited to try one of their newest offerings.

The Sofitel has partnered with The Art Gallery of NSW to create an Archibald inspired High Tea, to coincide with The Archibald Exhibition which is now showing.

The High Tea is held in their ground floor lounge bar, Soiree.  Soiree is filled with natural light, plenty of comfy seating and exudes the French charm which is synomous with the Sofitel brand.

Appropriately, an artistic High Tea has been created.  The first thing you will notice is they have chosen to do away with the traditional tiered stand and opted to serve their High Tea in a picture frame.  A nice touch!  Though, the table setting stays traditional with fine china and gold utensils creating a luxurious feel.

Now, let’s get to the important bit and find out exactly what is included on that picture frame!

Being a French brand you can be sure the treats have been prepared by a French pastry chef, so you won’t find any dry scones or soggy pastry here.

Here’s what’s on the menu:

Savoury:

  • Egg, soy beans, paprika, rocket sandwich on whole wheat
  • Roasted capsicum, goats cheese, chive on crispy ciabatta
  • Caramelised onions, mushroom and Gruyere tartlet

Sweet:

  • Homemade scones, with cream and homemade raspberry jam
  • Chocolate macaron
  • Fruit mille feuille
  • Lemon meringue tartlet
  • Mango eclair
  • Green tea Opera

You will also notice an interactive aspect to the spread – particularly the note which tells you to squeeze the chocolate grenache on to the macarons.  Trust us – you will want to squeeze that entire tube – more is more!

In terms of the liquid offerings, you may choose to include Champagne or sparkling wine, plus they have a Ronnefeldt Tea menu to chose from.

After taste testing every last treat on that plate (or rather frame), I can honestly say it is well worth the calories!  Each and every bite was delicious.

Yes, we ate every last piece on that frame!

Following the High Tea, you are given a ticket for The Archibald Exhibition.  The Art Gallery is about a 10 minute walk from The Sofitel (just head down Bent Street and cut across the parklands at The Domain).  The walk is welcomed after consuming all of those sweets and I believe that exercise also means you can consume them guilt free?! Bonus.

You should probably know (if you don’t already) The Archibald Prize is awarded annually to the best portrait, ‘of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia’.  While you are there, you can also view the Wynne and Sulman Prizes.
